Welcome to Country
What is a Welcome to Country? Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, including our own, have long had protocol in place around the welcoming of visitor/outsiders to homelands or to Country.
Typically, a Traditional Owner of that land will explain the Lore, extend an invitation for you to be there and grant you safe passage and protection during your time. Keep in mind that Country is more than physical land and includes the cultural values, resources, stories and obligations associated with that particular area and its features.
Welcomes are typically offered by Elders or those in community leadership roles. A Welcome to Country, when practised between different Mobs, shows deep respect and strengthens ties between communities. This should also, ideally, be the outcome when we extend a Welcome to non-Indigenous people, communities, organisations and groups.
