Welcome to the Tasmanian Aboriginal Elders Council

An Aboriginal Elder is someone who has gained recognition as a custodian of knowledge and lore, someone who has permission to disclose knowledge and beliefs.

Being an Elder is not defined simply by age. Individuals are recognised as an Elder because they show respect and display wisdom, harmony and balance through their actions, their activities and their involvement within the Aboriginal community where they are recognised.

We are a state-wide Lutruwita organisation based in Launceston with approximately 70 members. Our address is Chalmers Hall at 163 St Johns Street, just a few blocks from the city centre.

We aim to provide a safe cultural space for Elders to gather and connect and share our knowledge, culture and stories with each other along with our young mob.

The Elders Council of Tasmania Aboriginal Corporation also welcomes the wider community to utilise our centre.

This important community hub provides cultural activities and learning within the community and encourages the Aboriginal community to participate in community events with other agencies and partners. You can find our mission statement here.

We welcome all older Aboriginal people of Lutruwita to become members of the Elders. Click on the button below for a printable copy of our membership form.

We invite the general public to engage with and support the Elders Centre by coming to events that are open to everyone, making use of our hall and/or commercial kitchen and spreading the word about the Elders. We look forward to meeting you if we haven’t already.

Our bus

We now have our own LDV 11-seater minibus thanks to the UIACC Foundation who gifted us this vehicle in December 2022. It allows us to connect Elders, young people and community to Country by giving women’s and men’s group greater access to more parts of Lutruwita.

New logo

The Elders now has a logo, created using an original artwork by Aboriginal Elder Delia Summers. The team at Squawk Digital in Nipaluna/Hobart used Delia’s work as the basis for the design you see now on this website, our letterhead, membership form and anywhere else we can think to put it. Thank you Delia!
